What is PETg?

PETg stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol and is a variant of PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate or polyester) that has been modified with glycol to enhance the material's properties.

It is an amorphous plastic type with excellent mechanical and optical properties.

The material is often known by the brand name VIVAK®.

Properties and advantages

PETg is a transparent plastic type with excellent optical properties and a light transmission of approximately 88 percent.

The material has a high surface hardness and impact strength that is nearly comparable to polycarbonate (PC). Even under harsh conditions, it is difficult to break or crack, and it can achieve more durable results with thinner sheets than, for example, acrylic (PMMA).

Additionally, PETg offers extraordinary chemical resistance—better than other transparent plastic types—while its service temperature ranges from -40 °C to 65 °C.

Is the material approved for food-contact?

As a standard, PETg is not approved for food contact, but at Induflex, we have several types of this plastic available in stock — including several FCM-approved sheets.

Therefore, products can, in some cases, come into direct contact with food.

What is PETg used for?

Thanks to its strength and chemical resistance, PETg is suitable for a wide range of industrial plastic machine parts. It can be used for:

  • Safety and machine guards
  • Containers and other items for food
  • Dispensers
  • Viewing glasses and windows
  • Medical equipment
  • Orthopedic devices
  • Signs

And much more.

Machining of PETg

When it comes to processing PETg, sheets made from this material can be worked with various cutting techniques, such as laser cutting or die cutting on our cutting plotters.

Additionally, the material is highly stretchable and easy to thermoform, making it also suitable for heat bending.

Alternative
materials
to PETg

If a more rigid material with similar properties is required, PET (APET) could be an option. However, it is less flexible and not suitable for molded plastic items since glycol is not added.

Additionally, acrylic (PMMA) can also be used for food storage, offers high light transmission, and comes in various colors. However, it is not nearly as impact-resistant.

Polycarbonate is another alternative, as it provides even better impact resistance, along with UV resistance and flame-retardant qualities. However, this material is not as flexible and moldable.

Spørgsmål og svar
  • We have a large inventory of plastics, allowing us to fulfill requests for items in standard materials within 8-14 working days, depending on the complexity of your components.

If your project requires more specialized plastics, such as PETg with additives, we operate within a month. We only collaborate with European suppliers, ensuring we can quickly order materials to meet your needs.

  • At Induflex, we can achieve very tight tolerances in plastic.

When you order a plastic part from us, it will comply with Danish Standard ISO 2768-1 (medium) by default. We measure the tolerances at room temperature, around 21 °C.

Of course, we can agree on different tolerances if you wish.

  • By sending us a STEP file or PDF with your drawings, we can quickly assist you in determining whether polycarbonate is the right choice for your project.

We can also identify the best machining method for your components.
